Thicker is Better! Dispelling Some Myths

2006 and 2007 were very quiet years for Hurricanes here in Florida.

Most weather experts point to the gulf stream or the unexpected weakening in the el nino effect which has a correlation to the amount and path of the hurricanes we might anticipate.

Obviously, there is no basis to formulate any future events, based strictly on the previous two years; but we can sure keep our fingers crossed!

The 2008 economy is weaker than it has been for a decade and consumers are faced with numerous concerns.  The rising cost of cooling your home and the ever present reality of home and building security as a result of unprotected windows.

Large Missile Pass report

Thicker is Better!

It's not close when it gets down to performance in wind storm and cycling tests and impact tests with 2 X 4's shot from a cannon at annealed and tempered glass configurations.

Thinner films including those manufactured by CP Films, LLumar and Vista like the 4 ML and 6 ML products do not have the puncture resistance - to withstand the blow or hold through the cycling portion of the test.

Certain manufacturers claim they have been "Tested and Retested ; Our films have been subjected to windstorms, bomb blasts and all kinds of flying objects, and a rigorous series of durability tests. We have gone to extreme measures to make sure all our films meet or exceed industry standards for impact and tear resistance". .

But they cleverly omit the fact that they have never actually passed these larger 4.5 LB Missile tests!  (Funny isn't it that they somehow left out this critical fact?)

A certain manufacturer points out that their "4 ML films are stronger than any other manufacturer's 4 ML Films."

                                                               That's Comforting!

Their 4ML fails the test and our 4 ML fails the test. Their 5 ML and 6 ML fails. .Our 5 ML and 6 ML fail.

I gather that their 4, 5 and 6 ML fail better? Perhaps it takes slightly longer for them to fail?

Bottom Line:

LLumar Magnum and Vista 8 ML Films have passed the ASTM 1886 on annealed glass.

These films are available in wider widths compared to our (tested and failed) competition so there are never seams that would weaken the integrity of the glass protection. Our films are optically clearer, with no haze or distortion or color shift.

When it comes to life safety needs there is never room for wiggling or misconception.

We pass. .They fail
