Plain English or Bad English?

"Me fail English? That's unpossible. "

Ralph Wiggum (the Simpson's)

I usually write my blog posts at the crack of dawn. Cup of coffee, or two and off I go.

I'll admit it, my use of grammar might need an assist or two!!

This reminds me of the days when I'd send a weekly newsletter to 3M dealers around the country. I would add new e-mail addresses to my copy list after personally meeting with these business people.

Somehow I transposed an e-mail address from one business card and what should have been a dealer's e-mail  in Texas, actually turned out to be a high school English teacher's e-mail address in Oklahoma.

Let's call that "divine intervention!"

One day she wrote me a very funny e-mail in which she slammed my use of the Queen's English, corrected my spelling mistakes, and tried valiantly to explain the nuances between using "then" versus, "than." She lectured me that I should be embarrassed to send out such an "ill constructed" newsletter!

Humbled once again (an every day experience!) I politely and contritely asked her if she would mind correcting my newsletter before I sent it out? She agreed. Evidently my poor grammar would make her "wince."

So for 5 years or so, this gem of a lady made me appear at the very least grammatically correct if not minimally interesting as a newsletter author!

It's no doubt obvious that I, long ago, misplaced her e-mail address! (Then. .or Than, I was, am, really up the creek!)

So be patient and try to forgive my NYC Public School education!
