Gas Prices Top $ 4.00 Nationally For The First Time
I originally posted this on June 9, 2008 and obviously fuel prices have only increased since!
You will note that I posed the question below about heat blocking window films and the net effect these films have on decreased fuel consumption? The response I received was quite factual concerning the mechanics of a car's compressor. Frankly I was impressed with that factual response.
Now we note that my former company 3M has issued a release that purports to link their "Crystalline Film" with gas usage decreases. Unfortunately there were no white papers, lab reports, or independent verification cited.
It sounds like it would make sense that window films would reduce gas usage, but until, and unless someone corroborates this conclusion with solid evidence, we will avoid any over reaching statements!
I'll stick with that detailed response concerning the compressor!

The average price for gas has topped $ 4.00 for the first time!

This is particularly hurting our Bradenton neighbors who are dealing with the closed southbound lanes on I 75

I would love to produce for my readers a white paper report that would show specific gas cost savings with the installation of window tinting. The problem is that I have never seen any effort to quantify gas cost savings since drivers will naturally lower their AC because we are reducing the incoming heat by 65%.

There may be too many variables at play, so the concept of gas savings with window film is thus far, purely intuitive.
Perhaps some of the larger car tinting manufacturers like CP Films or Solargard might do a little bit of objective testing?
It can't be that difficult to accomplish!
In the meanwhile. .

We know our FormulaOne car film cuts 99.9% of the UV from entering your vehicle and we know that glare will be reduced and your passengers comfort will be enhanced!
If you use GPS (who doesn't these days?) our Pinnacle Films will not interfere with these signals and your radio reception will be just fine since our non metallic films do not attenuate these RF signals!

CPF will not be conducting temp vs AC vs Gas Mileage testing since it has already been done by NREL (Nat'l Renewable Energy Labs) not using solar control film.
Results? Seems as long as the internal switch is turned to the 'ON' position a car's compressor runs constant therefore having no impact on fuel efficiency and this too, no matter what temperature setting is selected.
Now, windows up or down, this impacts fuel efficiency.
Go Figure!?
