Energy Star Ratings And Window Film

There may be some confusion concerning the Energy Star ratings and window film in general.

Currently there are no Energy Star rated window films. The delay?

According to the Energy Star people themselves they base these ratings upon the NFRC Certification.

Since there are only two window film manufacturers (CP Films, LLumar Vista and Huper Optik-Southwall) that have qualified.  Advanced Film Solutions, Tampa Bay represents both of these solutions providers.

The Energy Star people are waiting for a larger base of window film manufacturers to base their ratings.

This is a key reason why the IWFA (International Window Film Association) is encouraging the laggards like Madico, Solar Gard and 3M to join their peers so that we can finally obtain the coveted Energy Star label.

Now you may have noticed that several window film companies highlight their Energy Star Partner relationship. Interestingly this is an entirely different consideration yet based on the flawed terminology of the Energy Star people themselves , it's small wonder that there is abuse and consumer confusion!

Window Film companies can certainly promote energy efficient products. Manufacturers can themselves commit to implementing Energy Star rated suggestions and meeting targets in reducing demand and by implementing these concepts in either their own manufacturing processes or at their corporate headquarters. This has, believe it or not, nothing at all to do with Energy Star Ratings of the window film itself!

Frankly the window film dealers and their manufacturers and distributors who are extolling their being Energy Star Partners, are either deliberately or innocently misleading.

Take your pick!

My head is starting to ache thinking about all of this gobbledy gook!

Here's the bottom line!

Vista Films and Huper Optik are NFRC Rated. .

They have documented their film performance and the specifications have been certified.

They are the only films to have met this threshold.

PERIOD.

Thanks for clearing the air on this one Mike! Energy Star ratings are one huge way that the window film industry can create consumer awareness which has been sorely needed. Window Film Professionals should urge their suppliers to take the necessary steps to gain this valuable certification for their products. Everyone complains about lack of public awareness, well... now is your chance to do something about it.
