Happy Birthday Mom

Today would have been my Mother's 77th birthday.

She passed away in 2005, but her birthday was always the most celebrated day in our family when my sister and I were growing up in Brooklyn. That's the way it was and somehow that just fit.

Mom was a very interesting character.  She would do things that would make me cringe when she spoke "her mind."

She loved a good fight and she was (sorry!) a bit loony.

People in "authority" at school like the Principal or our teacher would learn to keep their thoughts private when she'd show up at a Parents-Teachers night.

Dad on the other hand was quiet. VERY QUIET

Mom stirred the pot; Dad watched and wondered?

Growing up I'd look for her affirmation that I was the smartest kid in the class. Getting the best report card somehow only had value if she acknowledged the triumph.

I inherited a great deal of my psyche from her.

My contempt for phoniness and empty suits who pretend they have knowledge, while all along their sum total of competence is as thin as a wafer.

My long memory for slights.  There is no "water over the dam" in my game plan. No rest or let up in relentlessness.

Being AWARE rather than "getting by."  Being "in the moment" rather than sleep-walking through life.

Challenging the "that's how we always do it" mentality.

Never accepting that somehow a new boss has an innate superiority in talent, or more importantly, intelligence.

Mom taught me that women have every bit the capability as any man (and than some!)
Men who think otherwise are fools.

She taught me that if you are right; you should fight for what you believe in.

So today, like every August 24th I honor my Mother and pray for her.

What I'd give to watch her answer a call about pricing window tinting for a car!!  That would be a hoot!

Here Mom your favorite song!
