How To Set A Bogus Bid Specification In Window Film?
Check out this bid specification due in November and see if you might know of a solar film that factors out 97% of the IR between 900-1000 NM?
There was a very similar specification recently on a Southern Cal bid that was later withdrawn.
The question that has to be posed is whether this "specification" means anything significant?
The answer is an emphatic- - - NO!
This bogus 3M stipulation mirrored in this bid specification that their film blocks 97% of the IR between that very narrow wavelength (900-1000nm) attempts to persuade a rational decision maker (if you consider the FEDS as rational, of course) to make their determination based upon an irrational statistic!
You will note that the solar spectrum between 900-1000 nm has a natural valley in the solar spectrum. This is one reason why any IR rejecting window film will show a superior performance between this narrow measurement. You will note that heat is an outcome of the entire visible in combination with the entire IR spectrum. This is extremely important and the reason the glazing and legitimate window film industry has chosen to follow the NFRC criteria! Blocking 97% or 99.9% of this narrow wavelength means exactly what in terms of overall heat rejection??
It does sound good though- -doesn't it?
This is marketing fluff, pure and simple and so misleading that the iindustry as a whole has taken exception to their claims. Obviously this Blog has taken this bogus measurement on since we left 3M in 2007!
Is there any wonder that recent entries by the Korean and Chinese IR film suppliers are now all collectively promoting their films with 97-99.9% IR rejection between this same narrow bandwidth?
Imitating this nonsense doesn't make the end result any more valid.
An Illusion Of Effectiveness
Window Film people understand the importance of the entire IR wavelength and visible light spectrum that actually determines heat

Huper 70 Vs Prestige
TSER Marketing
So here's the alternatives left to any window film installation company that competes against a 3M prestige dealer on this and any other project that specifies this baloney.
A) You can attempt to educate the buyer, decision maker that the spec is bogus. Refer them to the assorted white paper tech bulletins.
Grab yourself any NexFil, IRis 70 and a host of unpronounceable Chinese and Korean Films that brag about this same IR rejection misleading measurement.
C) Tell a bigger lie and convince the buyer that 99% of that wavelength is better than 97% (even though both numbers are ridiculous and meaningless!
Isn't this a fun business?
I find it IR- Rational
IR- Ittating
IR- Responsible
IR- Roneous (I made that up!)
