My Decade Of Window Film

You can hardly avoid reading these pieces describing the events of the last decade.

The next generation: Adam, Rachel, Gregory.

We all like to neatly compartmentalize events into something tangible.  The holidays remind of us past holidays spent with loved one's.  We can recall those special times when our children were babies; their eyes filled with wonder as they open their next gift. (Now look at them!)

My decade began with being the National Sales Manager at 3M Window Film and ends with completing our third year as Advanced Film Solutions and Window Film USA.

In many ways this blog is my journey from corporate shenanigans to self employment and self empowerment.

It's a decade of discovering that what you may have thought you wanted isn't always what you get.

Along the way I spent hundreds of hours on airplanes; drove from St. Paul, MN back to Tampa after September 11, 2001 and watched my comfort level completely altered time and time again.

We all make choices in our lives and I chose to stay with window film. (I bet there are some people out there that wished I'd have picked something else to do?)

I kind of like the simplicity of the solution.  The ability to take this thin film and take ordinary glass and make it extraordinary is almost magical.

When I was at 3M I understood the films we marketed weren't better value than the competitors window film.  Our deal was that logo and the brand awareness, of course.

I recall 10 years ago meeting with the gents at Best Window Film in California asking them why they bought so much VISTA Film; and they showed me their V 28 film.  That began my push for Night Vision Film; which is still (I gather) a mainstay product (old version or new) for my former associates at 3M.

I heard my old friend and the lab guy that put that film together for me ( Ken Smith!) is retiring in January- Someone tell him : Good Luck from me!

2010 is one week away.

Nearly three years since leaving 3M.

Three years of growing our Tampa based business into one of the largest window film installation companies in Florida.

Three years without one stinking Hurricane!

Three years of the worst economy since Roosevelt!

One year from being in the hospital on three separate occasions.  Funny how being close to the "great beyond" tends to focus one's mind!

There's one thing for sure- -it's been REAL!

Happy New Year and Best Of Luck in the coming decade!

Mike
