Window Film USA -FM Approval-Why It Matters?

The wind damage reported from Houston immediately after Hurricane Gustav indicated that windows were blown out in high rise buildings.

The LLumar and Vista 8 ML thick window films anchored with DOW 995 anchor glass in place during these high wind events. High-rise condominiums, hotels, etc. should consider these shatter films during  hurricane season.

Solutia Performance Films, the manufacturer of Vista
and Llumar Magnum Safety and Security Window Film has passed the Factory Mutual small missile standard.

"... CPFilms announces positive test results!  We tested LLumar 8 mil clear film on tempered glass to meet Factory Mutual requirements, and LLumar 8 mil solar film on annealed glass to meet ASTM E 1886/1996 requirements."

OK- What is Factory Mutual and why is this important to Property, Facility and Risk Managers throughout Florida and the USA ?

The FM testing takes a logical approach to independent testing.

They eliminate the possibility of "loading the dice" by ear marking a random sampling of window film selected by FM. The same random selection for frames and the glass.  The application of a fastening/anchoring system is monitored and a PE issues the exact drawings and detailed specifications. The actual wind storm debris testing is taken to an independent FM approved lab.  The missile test and wind cycling and water tests are monitored as well.

FM Approval provides a an opportunity for reduced insurance premium costs for the commercial property owner.

This incentive coupled with reduced energy consumption (solar film) and ROI (improved chiller and HVAC costs), aesthetics, improved tenant comfort and energy incentives from local utilities like Progress Energy and TECO are quite noteworthy.
