Social Networking & Window Film-Huh?
When I wrote my first blog entry in early 2007, I had no idea if anyone, other than me, would read it?
Back in the early days at Advanced Film Solutions, I was still in the early stages of transitioning from 33 years of corporate indoctrination at 3M to the "Real World".
I wrote everything like a corporate wonk. Because after all, it's all I knew.
This blog is a mish-mash of facts, emotion, braggadocio and meager attempts at humor.
I'll take it as serious as a heart attack one day, and fall over laughing at the irony and foolishness of this industry the next!
To be sure I have several consistent themes (some might say redundant) that I recycle. Like film; some great ideas do stick!
Window film might not be the most exciting occupation in the world, but we do have our moments of clarity and intrigue.
My take on this business is decidedly skewed.
It's a recipe formed by my adventures at 3M and my unusual obsessions about all things window film.
Who else has been a national sales manager of a player in this industry who launched their own company and survived (I might say flourished) as an independent dealer?
But I digress, (there I go bragging again!)
You'll notice that I never detail how much film we buy or how much sales we've had?
That's because I have this superstitious streak bordering on fear, that if I say it, I'll immediately lose business and the walls will come crashing down.
As a dealer I have learned to separate the BS when it comes to the reality of running your own business.
Corporate types can (and do!) keep their distance.
Does this blog, my Twitter feed, Facebook or LinkedIn help drive business?
I could really care less.
Nevertheless; I see more uses of the words "Advanced Film Solutions" on the net than ever before. More inconsequential blog entries being written than you can believe. More imitations and some complete cut and pasting of my blog entries.
I am flattered.
This is a movie that never ends.
The hero of this story (ME!) exits 3M.
I start my own company after considering working directly for Solar Gard, Global and several nearby 3M dealers.
Pride-Ego-Anger-Passion-Stubbornness-Talent? Drives me to strike out on my own!
Queue the music!!
We launch 5 years ago (95% of all new companies fail before year 5, I've read)
Saturday we did three homes, 20 more during the week, and one large commercial building.
Symphony music please!
But. .
Tomorrow (yeah two more homes) isn't guaranteed for any of us.
Next week, next month, next year?
Who knows?
The curtain never closes.
