There’s nothing quite so ironic for me than standing at our Advanced Film Solutions booth while home show attendee’s walk up carrying a 3M logo plastic bag.

This show is no different than any of the dozens of home shows we have done over the last 9 years. 

Leaving aside the three plus decades at 3M and my resume as a sales person, account exec or National Sales Manager of window films and an intimate knowledge of their product performance, etc. let’s deal with a strictly objective comparison based on irrefutable facts.

The performance characteristics are public information and we take absolutely no back seat to 3M’s window film products.

Our VISTA, Madico, Armorcoat, Sun Tek and ARMORCOAT have all passed the ASTM1886  4.5 Missile Test with an anchoring system (Dow 995)

The 3M Ultra Films (all solar security versions)  DO NOT MEET THIS PERFORMANCE LEVEL. This includes their Prestige Ultra Series S25 Night Vision.

They re-box another companies cheap dual reflective (Affinity) and offer only 3 light transmission choices in their night vision line.

Window Film In The USA – The Right Time?

Window film has demonstrated the ability to lower energy costs, filter out harmful UV, provide security and privacy and earn a ROI better than any other home retrofit solution.

Nevertheless window film has never received the awareness level that it deserves.

One reason for the poor recognition is the lack of dealer training in all aspects of thin film capabilities and installation. This missing level of competency is the single greatest obstacle to growth.

No matter the window film, the proficiency of the installer is paramount.

The window film business is a very mature industry dating back to the 1950’s.

The originality and innovative aspects of the business long ago eroded into a commodity type business. You know this is true when you see my alma mater 3M re-boxes films made elsewhere and begin their migration from viable independent dealers to depot type installation people and window cleaners.

The cost of entry into this business has  historically been low and the various manufacturers have knowingly encouraged this lower class Flea Market mentality by not requiring standards be met or quotas attained. 

This creates low cost installations that they surmise would encourage more film sales.

The BTU meter and heat lamp demo create an illusion of performance

The narrow wavelengths produced by the IR lamp is not indicative of the entire solar spectrum.

Bottom line it’s a trick.

  • The Prestige 70 has fair heat rejection slightly over 50% (but certainly not 97%!!)  Check the NFRC website which documents the actual performance of Prestige 70.

On Angle Window Film Or What’s Your Angle?

The clever world of window film might tend to get a bit confusing for the neophyte.

After all most people simply want to know if the window film they choose will keep the heat out?

Competition is a good thing and because the window film business is a mature industry there are various strategies employed to attempt to position one particular film over another.

So we have had one particular window film manufacturer (3M) inventing a bogus angle test measurement and continuing to brag about Prestige’s performance at an angle.

See- -They still claim that their film works better at an angle. (of course that works for glass at an angle and her hair above!)

So in “their” imaginative world their film works much better at say 3 PM than it does at say 12 PM. Amazing!!

You are supposed to believe that this miraculous technology is unique. That perhaps the rest of the world of window film envies this capability?Doubtful, since the rest of the window film world is still trying to correct Prestige claims about their 97% IR Heat rejection!!

It seems that glass itself works exactly the same way! That’s right- -your windows already work better at an angle than they do at mid-day.

This isn’t exactly “news” to window film experts and that’s why INDUSTRY STANDARDS and documented measurements are conducted with the light source (SUN) at a 90 degree angle to the glass.

All window films work better at an angle! 

The rest of the window film world went ballistic or at the very least went angular.

They produced White Papers. TSER On Angle (This reminds me of a scientist explaining why the Earth revolves around the Sun rather than the other way around. Empirical facts are fine. .the bottom line is that the competitor is acting rather like Pinocchio above!)

They quoted objective fenestration experts.

They tried any and every angle to correct these Prestige claims.

The result??

Now Prestige has been introduced as a car film is it called Crysta lying and guess what??

Their car film supposedly works better at 3 PM than it does at 12 PM!!

Or is that 2 PM versus 9 AM???

So before you buy any ridiculous, fantastic selling angle, no matter the time of day. .
